Vintage Clone of DR103

Postby amps_go_boom on Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:12 am

Hello every1,new to the forums.

Recently I got a chance to repair and restore an Hiwatt Custom 100 clone(cosmetically terrible shape, and few things to fix on amp).
It was made in mid 80's here in Cro by an unknown guitar amp builder(or should I say cloner :) )

It had eff loop( I removed that) and it has adjustable bias.

Retubed it with new set of JJ el34's and also JJ for preamp (did put an ecc81 on V1 in preamp).

Since it is for a bass player,he asked if I could build him Hiwatt bass cabs.
I don't know if thing like that exits actually,so I found this forum and came to ask You all about Hiwatt bass cabs.

Here are some pictures of clone after all things fixed and head cabinet which is right dimensions but holes for piping will be fixed so it looks like original.

Interesting clone. :)

Hiwatt sold a bunch of different bass cabinets. Check out the catalogs here:

Interesting combination,2x15 in big box.

Too bad no 4x10/8x10 Hiwatt conf.

Yes,there are myn Marshall,Fender and Hiwatt amp cones out here.
Too bad Marshall one are very bad, fender's are often some mixed circuits and Hiwatt looks smililar to layout but many different values and things.

Sound is OK,even on guitar u hear that Hiwatt tone, but on bass rocks, low end goes out pretty good after modifications.

The Hylight Hiwatt bass cabs were developed at a time when bigger was better. In that day, no one made a 10" speaker that could either produce those frequencies or tolerate the punishment. Check that - I guess Ampeg was producing SVT (8x10) cabs by that time - but that's the only one I can think of. Most manufacturers were relying on 18" speakers and/or folded horn cabinets for bass.

There's nothing saying you couldn't build a Hiwatt style cab and load it with 10's (Eminence Delta Pros would be a good choice).

I will probably search the internet for Ampeg 8x10 cab,and if lucky built that one in Hiwatt look.

Here is a short demo of amp made with guitar, custom build chorus and AD9 vintage delay.
